One of the biggest challenges in hormonal health is the lack of early comprehensive education across all genders. This gap leads to numerous challenges for women+ and fosters a lack of empathy and understanding. Right now, Washington, DC is the only city that mandates multi-year menstrual education.
Education is where we learn what a normal period looks like. Until this information is widespread, I want to share what your period should look like. That’s why we created the FREE E-Book: The Period Class You Wish You Had. This guide dives into the do’s and don’ts of hormonal health, focusing on understanding your brain, body, and emotions during your period. It’s for those about to start menstruation, those who never will, and those who have been menstruating for years!
Periods can feel like a wild ride, but understanding what’s normal is empowering. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect:
Color: Period blood can range from bright red to dark red. Small clots are normal, but clots larger than 1 inch may signal hormonal issues—see your OBGYN.
Mood & Emotions: Slight mood changes are normal before your period due to hormonal shifts. However, severe PMS shifts like deep depression feelings, raging anger, and overwhelming anxiety isn’t normal and should be checked by your doctor.
Pain: Light, dull cramping is normal, but severe pain isn’t. If cramps interfere with daily life, it could signal conditions like endometriosis or fibroids—seek guidance. If you find your self frequently in this positions (below) this is not normal.
Energy: Feeling tired during your period is normal. Rest when needed, cancel plans if needed, and try gentle activities like walking or stretching.
Emotions: Emotional fluctuations are natural, cognitively you're actually best set up for contemplating life during your period. This is a great time for self-reflection, journaling, or quiet time.
Every period is unique. What’s most important is understanding your body’s signals. If something feels off, reach out for support. We’re here to help you feel your best every day of the month.
Sending strength and support,
